Mavs Drop to Losers' Bracket in NCAA Regional

WARRENSBURG, MO -- The UNO baseball team lost to Wayne State College 3-0 in the first game of the NCAA II Central Regional on Thursday afternoon. UNO (40-18) will play Friday morning at 11 a.m. against Emporia State, an 8-0 loser to Central Missouri State Thursday night.
Wayne State's Nick Schumacher carried a no-hitter into the ninth inning before giving up a leadoff single to Marc Centofante. Schumacher was relieved by Dustin Nilius with one out in the ninth, who picked up his ninth save of the season.
The Mavericks had their chances to score in three of the first six innings but failed to get to Schumacher. UNO stranded a total of 10 base runners in the game and managed only one single.
Troy Cloyd (10-3) suffered his first loss in nine starts. The senior out of Bellevue East gave up a pair of runs in the third inning on RBI singles by Mike Sorensen and Brian Van Driel. WSC scratched out another run in the eighth inning after pinch runner Jeff Witthoft scored from second base on a sacrifice bunt and a fielding error by UNO's Matt Meyer.
Cloyd's scoreless inning streak ended at 28 innings with the two runs scored in the third inning. He struck out eight and walked two.
