Mavs Eliminate Hornets to Stay Alive in Regional

WARRENSBURG, MO -- Matt Meyer's two-out two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth inning lifted the Nebraska-Omaha baseball team to a 7-4 win over Emporia State in the losers' bracket game of the NCAA II Central Regional on Friday afternoon.
UNO (41-18) will play again at 7 p.m. Friday night and will face the loser of the Central Missouri State/Wayne State winners' bracket game to be played at 3 p.m. Friday.
The Mavericks jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning. Brian Frew's sacrifice fly scored Chad Leon after Leon reached after being hit by a pitch, stole second and advanced to third on a wild throw. Troy Cloyd knocked in two more runs in the inning with a two-run double off the fence in left center field.
Emporia State clawed their way back into the game with a run in the third inning and took a 4-3 lead on Josh Schuab's two-run single in the sixth.
The lead didn't last for long. With two outs, Marc Centofante singled to right field, setting the stage for Meyer's third homer of the year.
UNO added two more insurance runs in the eighth inning. Josh Shirk singled to lead off the inning. Min Sung doubled down the left field line before Cloyd drove in his third run of the game on base hit to right. Lyle Lafountain's ground ball to shortstop scored Sung to make the score 7-4.
Tim Huber (5-2) picked up the win for UNO, scattering eight hits over six innings. He gave way to the Maverick bullpen in the seventh where Weston Cooper, Adam Drury and Brandon Kelley held ESU to just two hits in the final three innings.
