
UNO Sweeps Past Minnesota State, Mankato

OMAHA, NE -- The Nebraska-Omaha baseball team claimed a share of the North Central Conference regular season title by defeating Minnesota State, Mankato 22-1 and 7-6 in eight innings on Saturday afternoon at the Ballpark at Boys Town on Senior Day.
Nebraska-Omaha recorded season-highs for runs (22) and hits (23) in the opening game. UNO scored two runs in the first inning on Troy Cloyd's two-run double. David Bodnar opened up the second inning with a solo shot to left center and Matt Meyer followed two batters later with an inside the park home run. Lyle Lafountain made the score 7-0 with a two-run homer to center field in the third inning.
UNO broke the game open in the fourth inning with seven consecutive hits and seven runs.
Every UNO starter recorded at least one RBI in the contest. Cloyd finished the game going 4-for-5 with three doubles, a home run and three RBI. Lyle Lafountain drove in four runs to lead the Mavs.
Tim Huber (3-2) picked up the win for Nebraska-Omaha. He allowed only two hits over six innings and struck out four.
In the second game, UNO picked up right where they left off and scored three runs in the first inning. Chad Leon led off with a walk and scored on a double by Brian Frew. Josh Shirk followed with a double of his own and scored on a single by Min Sung, who scored three batters later on a sacrifice fly by David Bodnar.
After MSU scratched across a run in the third inning, UNO built a 5-1 lead in the bottom half of the inning on Marc Centofante's bases loaded two-run single.
Minnesota State, Mankato responded and took a 6-5 lead in the fourth inning after five hits and a walk.
The MSU lead held until the bottom of the seventh inning. With one out, Marc Centofante doubled off of reliever Kevin Dixon. Matt Meyer then hit a ground ball to shortstop Ryan Greene and his throw to first was wild, scoring pinch runner Jeff Hansen for the tying run.
UNO reliever Brandon Kelley (2-2) retired MSU in order in the top of the eighth before the Mavs' rally in the bottom of the inning.
Brian Frew led off the eighth with a walk and Josh Shirk singled to right field. After a failed attempt to advance the runners on a David Bodnar bunt, Troy Cloyd hit a ball with one out to second baseman Kurt Beulke, who flipped it to shortstop Ryan Greene who's throw sailed into the first base side dugout to score Shirk for the winning run.
Nebraska-Omaha (37-17, 14-6 NCC) will host the North Central Conference Tournament on May 12-14.
