Volleyball Alumni Upsets Mavericks

OMAHA, Neb. -- Former Maverick three-time All-Americans Ruth Evans and Tracy Ankeny-Blair combined for 23 kills to leads the UNO Alumni to a 30-28, 30-28, 30-25 victory over the 2005 University of Nebraska at Omaha volleyball team Saturday night, Aug. 20, before 317 fans at the Sapp Fieldhouse.
Evans (1985-88) led the Alumni with 12 kills and seven digs while hitting a match-high .391. Ankeny-Blair (1997-2000) recorded a double-double with 11 kills and 11 digs. All-American setter Amy Steffel-Mandolfo (1993-96) registered 44 assists and 10 digs in the win.
UNO was led by junior outside hitter Christina Reicks and sophomore middle blocker Carlie Christensen, who each recorded 10 kills in the loss. Reicks added 13 digs while Christensen added four blocks. Senior middle blocker Briana Ritter tallied nine kills on a team-high .350 hitting percentage, while also adding a match-high five blocks. Senior setter Christie Johnson directed the Maverick attack with 40 assists, five digs, five kills, and two service aces.
The Mavericks were led defensively be senior libero Chelsea Miller, who notched a match-high 17 digs.
Nebraska-Omaha will open the 2005 regular season next weekend when they host the Omaha Executive Inn Classic on Friday and Saturday, Aug. 26-27 at the Sapp Fieldhouse. The Mavericks' four opponents in the tournament include: Regis, Hillsdale, Drury, and Southern Illinois-Edwardsville.
