
SIU Edwardville Upsets UNO in Tourney Finale

OMAHA, Neb. -- Southern Illinois Edwardsville spoiled the Mavericks' hopes of going undefeated in the season-opening Omaha Executive Inn & Suites Classic by posting a 30-20, 23-30, 27-30, 30-27, 15-11 victory in the tournament's final match before 455 fans at the Sapp Fieldhouse Saturday night. Both UNO and SIUE finished the tournament with 3-1 records, as did Wayne State and 19th-ranked Rockhurst.
Senior libero Chelsea Miller posted a career-high 34 digs, which ties for seventh on the school's single-match records' chart.
The Mavericks used a balanced attack with four players in double-figure kills. Senior Ashley Freeman led UNO with 17 kills. Sophomore Carlie Christensen and senior Heather Hainline each tallied 14 kills. Senior Briana Ritter added 11 kills and two blocks in the loss.
Southern Illinois outhit the Mavericks .242 to .172 and held a commanding 26 to 8 advantage in total blocks.
Senior setter Christie Johnson recorded a season-high 44 assists, 10 digs, four service aces, and six kills.
The Mavericks will return to action next Friday and Saturday, Sept. 2 and 3, when they participate in the prestigious Colorado Premier Challenge in Denver.
