Mavs Host USD Thursday

The Mavericks meet North Central Conference rival South Dakota on Thursday at Sapp Fieldhouse and then enterain Upper Iowa in a non-conference game Saturday night as they continue their five-game homestand. Both games start at 6 p.m.
Radio/TV
The games will be broadcast, with David Gustafson calling the action on KOZN, 1620 AM. The South Dakota game will also be televised on NET1, statewide cable, as well as on South Dakota Public Television. Rich Roberts will call the action.
For the Record
UNO is 12-6 on the season overall and is 0-3 in the North Central Conference. South Dakota comes into Thursday's game with a 12-5 overall record and is 0-2 in the NCC. Upper Iowa is 5-12 and does not play until Saturday.
Coaching Staff
Head Coach Patty Patton Shearer is beginning her second season as the head coach at UNO and has a 26-20 mark. Overall in five seasons in college she is 86-69 She compiled a 60-49 record over four seasons at Fort Lewis College before becoming UNO's head coach in the summer of 2004. She is a 1990 graduate of Rocky Mountain College. Her assistants, all in their second seasons at UNO as well, are Jason Flores, Brad Schick and Maurtice Ivy.
The Opponents
South Dakota and UNO both lost last week to No. 2 ranked North Dakota and are looking for their first NCC win. The Coyotes were 17-13 last year under coach Chad Lavin. Upper Iowa, which will join the Northern Sun Conference next season, is led by Christa Hammel, who is averaging 14.4 points and 10.2 rebounds.
The Series
UNO holds a 30-27 lead in the series with the Coyotes after winning both meetings last year. This is the second meeting with Upper Iowa; UNO won, 85-50, Nov. 22 in the first.
Looking Ahead
The Mavericks will play two more home games next week, hosting St. Cloud State on Thursday, Jan. 26, and Grand Canyon on Saturday, Jan. 28. Both games tip-off at 6 p.m.
