No. 4 Huskies Pull Away from Mavs

St. Cloud State's torrid second-half shooting helped the No. 4-ranked Huskies pull away from the Mavericks to post an 85-60 North Central Conference win Thursday night at Lee & Helene Sapp Fieldhouse.
UNO, which fell to 14-7 and 1-4, played on even terms with the 18-1, 4-1 Huskies the first half, forcing 10 lead changes. The Mavericks used a 10-4 run to take their last lead, 30-29, on Ashley Freerksen's field goal with 3:42 to play in the half.
St. Cloud State then scored eight straight points, with six coming from Jackie Carlson, and outscored the Mavs 12-3 to take a 38-33 advantage into halftime. The Huskies kept the momentum going after the break, scoring the first 12 points to forge a 50-33 lead with 16:54 to play and shot 54.8 percent from the field the second half.
JJ Smith and Karen Thies ended the run with two-point shots for UNO, but that was as close as the Mavericks could get the rest of the way. SCSU answered with a 15-4 run capped by a Shannon Francis three-pointer for a 68-42 lead with 8:44 left.
The Huskies finished at 48.5 percent shooting for the game while holding UNO to 34.8 percent.
Francis led St. Cloud State with 22 points and nine rebounds, Erika Quigley added 16 points and nine rebounds and Jackie Carlson 13 points. Francis, who hit all three shots she took from behind the arc, scored 13 the second half.
Smith's 15 points led UNO and helped her move into 10th place in career scoring with 1,170. Lacey Geitzenhauer added 10 points.
UNO is next in action Saturday night when it hosts Grand Canyon University at 6.
