UNO Knocks Off Nanooks, 4-1

FAIRBANKS, Alaska--The UNO hockey team snapped a 14-game winless streak at the Carlson Center Friday night with a 4-1 victory over Alaska Fairbanks.
UNO (14-11-2, 8-9-2 CCHA) rattled off four unanswered goals to earn its first-ever win on UAF's home ice. Alaska Fairbanks dropped to 10-12-2 and 6-11-2 in the CCHA.
Alaska Fairbanks grabbed a 1-0 lead at 9:28 of the first period on a Kelly Czuy power play goal. Nebraska-Omaha's penalty kill unit gave the team a lift late in the opening period when the Mavs capitalized on a turnover and Alex Nikiforuk scored shorthanded with just 1:07 left in the period.
UNO's Bryan Marshall scored the only goal of the second period when he scored in between the circles on a wristshot at the 10:56 mark to give his team a 2-1 advantage.
Nebraska-Omaha extended its lead to 4-1 early on in the final period on two goals by Scott Parse and Bill Thomas. UNO scored its second shorthanded goal of the game when Bill Bagron found Parse, who just exited the penalty box, connecting on a forehand shot for his 13th goal of the year at 1:45. UNO's Thomas then netted his team-leading 19th goal at 3:11 on a wristshot from the left circle to give UNO a three goal lead.
UNO outshot the Nanooks 34-18 in the contest.
The two teams will meet again Saturday night in the series finale.
