Viking 2nd Half Drops Mavs, 80-64

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. -- Augustana pulled away from the Mavericks in the second half and posted its 29th straight home win with an 80-64 decision in the North Central Conference opener for both teams Thursday night at the Elmen Center.
The win elevated the Vikings to 12-3 and dropped UNO to 12-4 before visiting No. 2 ranked North Dakota Saturday night.
The Mavericks shot 56 percent from the field and overcame a six-point deficit with a 12-2 run in claiming a 35-33 lead at halftime. Karen Thies scored half of her game-high 24 points the first half, hitting 4 of 8, including a pair of key three-pointers.
UNO cooled down after the break and the Vikings broke away, scoring 10 straight ponts to take a 57-48 lead with 8:55 to play. The Mavericks pulled as close as five on a three-pointer by Toni Kinsey with 5:21 left to trail 60-55.
Augustana's Ashley Holiday responded with a three-point play less than a minute later and Andrea Seefeldt added two free shots and a three-pointer with 2:50 left to build a 68-57 margin.
The Vikings converted six foul shots in the final 90 seconds to protect the lead.
UNO shot 31.3 percent from the field the second half to finish at 42.1 percent to the Vikings' 40.7 percent.
Besides Theis' 24 points, Ashley Freerksen added 10 and a team-high nine rebounds. The Mavs' leading scorer, senior JJ Smith, got foul trouble early, was held to just four points and fouled out with 3:32 left.
Seefeldt and Alison Adamson led the Vikings with 18 points each, Chelsea DeVille added 11 and Jessica Klein 10. Holiday finished with eight points and a game-high 10 rebounds.
