Mavs Fall to No. 2 North Dakota

GRAND FORKS, N.D. -- JJ Smith scored 15 points and Cayla Hargrove 13, but it wasn't enough to stop No. 2 ranked North Dakota from cruising to its 18th straight win Saturday night in front of 2,718 at the Betty Engelstad Sioux Center. The Fighting Sioux dropped UNO to 12-5 with an 89-64 decision.
It was the North Central Conference opener for the Fighting Sioux, while UNO fell to 0-2 before hosting UND in a rematch Thursday night at Sapp Fieldhouse.
The Mavericks fell behind early as UND went on a 17-2 run to take a quick 23-5 lead, then battled back to within 11 late in the first half before UND claimed a 42-28 lead at the break.
The Sioux never allowed UNO within less than 10 points the second half and sped away with an 18-4 run midway through the half.
LaCheryl Prince added 10 points and Ashley Freerksen 9 for the Mavericks, who shot 41.5 percent from the field and hit 6 of 20 from behind the arc. UND finished the game shooting 55.6 percent from the field.
Ashley Langen led UND with 22 points and Kristi Boese added 15 points and 10 rebounds as UND matched the school record for the best start to a season.
