Late Goal by Koehler Ties CC; UNO Wins Shootout

ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- Freshman JJ Koehler's first collegiate goal with less than four minutes left gave UNO a tie with Colorado College Friday night in the first round of the Nye Frontier Classic. The Mavericks advanced in the tournament by winning a shootout over the Tigers and will meet Alaska-Anchorage Saturday night at 10:07 p.m. CDT.
While the Mavericks won the shootout on goals by Adam Bartholomay, Bryan Marshall, Scott Parse and Alex Nikiforuk, the game will officially go down as a tie. UNO is 0-0-1, while Colorado College is now 2-0-1. Alaska-Anchorage and Merrimack played the second game Friday night.
The Tigers caught UNO on a line change late in the first period and Jimmi Kilpatrick's slap shot beat UNO goalie Jerad Kaufmann under the crossbar at 17:36.
The Mavericks tied the game on a power play with 30 seconds left in the period. All-American Parse passed the puck to Nikiforuk who found Tomas Klempa open in front of UAA goaltender Matt Zaba.
After a scoreless middle stanza, the Tigers took the lead on a power play goal by Scott McCulloch just 28 seconds into the period. The Mavericks tied the game as Juha Uotila skated in and put a shot on Zaba. Koehler picked up the rebound and converted it at 16:04.
