Mavericks Shoot for 3rd Straight Title in Stampede

Nebraska-Omaha comes back home to the Qwest Center Omaha to host the Mutual of Omaha Stampede. Northern Michigan and UMass-Lowell will play at 4:05 p.m. and UNO meets Niagara at 7:05 p.m. Friday. The first-round losers meet at 4:05 p.m. Saturday with the championship game at 7:05 p.m. The Mavericks have won the tournament, which is now in its seventh year, in 2004 and 2005.
Media Coverage
The games will be broadcast on KKAR, 1290 AM, with the pre-game show beginning 30 minutes before face-off. Greg Harrington will call the action, with Terry Leahy providing color commentary.
The Records
UNO opened regular season play last weekend with a pair of 2-2 ties against Colorado College and Alaska-Anchorage and is 0-0-2. Niagara is 2-2-0, Northern Michigan is 1-2-1 and UMass-Lowell brings a 0-1-1 record.
The Coach
Nebraska-Omaha's Mike Kemp is in his 10th season as the Maverick head coach. Kemp is a 1975 graduate of Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minn. The Duluth, Minn., native is 144-171-39 at UNO overall and has a 77-90-29 mark in the CCHA.
The Series
Niagara holds a 4-2-1 edge on the Mavericks all-time, with the last meeting a 4-0 UNO win in October, 2000. The Mavericks won the only previous meeting with UMass-Lowell, in December, 2000, by a 5-2 score in a tournament in Huntsville, Ala. UNO leads fellow CCHA member Northern Michigan, 10-9-2.
Last Week
The Mavericks earned a pair of 2-2 ties in the Nye Frontier Classic in Anchorage, Alaska. Friday, Freshman JJ Koehler's first collegiate goal at 16:04 pulled UNO even with Colorado College. For tie-breaker purposes, the Mavs won a shootout, 4-2, after the overtime. Saturday, All-American Scott Parse scored twice, the second one coming shorthanded at 17:29 to tie Alaska-Anchorage. The Sea Wolves claimed the tournament title with a 3-1 win in the shootout. Parse was named the outstanding player in the tournament and teammate Juha Uotila was also named to the all-tournament squad.
Last Year
UNO used a strong second half to springboard into a tie for fourth place in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association. The Mavericks then went on to earn their first-ever trip to the NCAA tournament, losing in the first round to Boston University. The Mavericks finished the season 20-15-6.
