Mavs Fall in Mututal of Omaha Final, 5-2

OMAHA, Neb. - Northern Michigan's Mike Santorelli scored twice and added three assists to lead the Wildcats to a 5-2 win over UNO in the championship game of the Mutual of Omaha Stampede in front of 5,187 at the Qwest Center Saturday night.
Santorelli, who capped his five-point night with a shorthanded goal to seal the win with less than four minutes left, was named the tournament's most valuable player. He also had a goal in NMU's 2-1 win Friday night over UMass-Lowell.
The Mavericks, who open Central Collegiate Hockey Association play next weekend at home against Western Michigan, fell to 1-1-2 on the season while the Wildcats moved to 3-2-0.
The Wildcats claimed a 1-0 lead midway through the first period on a power play goal by Nick Sirota. They padded their lead with goals less than three minutes apart early in the second period on a power play goal by Zach Tarkir at 4:08 and and even strength goal by Santorelli.
The Mavericks sliced the margin a half-minute later when Adam Bartholmay stole the puck at the UNO blue line and skated down the right wing to the NMU zone. He snapped a high shot over the right shoulder of Wildcat goaltender Bill Zaniboni for his second of the year at 7:35.
Eight minutes later the Wildcats answered with a goal by Matt Siddall, however, for a 4-1 lead at the second intermission.
UNO drew within a pair midway through the third period when freshman center Nick Fanto scored his first collegiate goal on assists from Bartholomay and Mark Bernier.
The all-tournament team included Northern Michigan goaltender Bill Zaniboni, defensemen Nick Schaus, UMass-Lowell and Zach Tarkir, Northern Michigan, and forwards Siddall and Santorelli of NMU as well as UNO's Brandon Scero, who scored a school-record four goals in UNO's 10-1 Friday night victory over Niagara.
UMass-Lowell defeated Niagara 7-4 in the third-place game earlier Saturday.
