CCHA Play Starts for Mavericks Friday

Nebraska-Omaha opens its 28-game Central Collegiate Hockey Association schedule this weekend when it hosts Western Michigan on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 27-28. Faceoff at the Qwest Center Omaha (16,680) will be at 7:05 p.m. CDT each night.

The games will be broadcast on KKAR, 1290 AM, with the pre-game show beginning 30 minutes before face-off. Greg Harrington will call the action, with Terry Leahy providing color commentary.
The Records
UNO split a pair of games in its Mutual of Omaha Stampede last weekend and will go into this week's games at 1-1-2 overall. Western Michigan is 2-2-0 overall and in the CCHA after splits with Michigan State and Ferris State.
The Coaches
Nebraska-Omaha's Mike Kemp is in his 10th season as the Maverick head coach. Kemp is a 1975 graduate of Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minn. The Duluth, Minn., native is 145-172-39 at UNO overall and has a 77-90-29 mark in the CCHA. He is 7-7-4 vs. the Broncos. Jim Culhane is in his eight season behind the Western Michigan bench. He has a 112-139-29 record entering the weekend. The 1987 Western Michigan graduate is 7-7-4 vs. the Mavericks.
The Series
The all-time series between UNO and Western Michigan is tied at 7-7-4. The Mavericks lead in games played in Omaha, 4-3-1. The teams have not played in Omaha since the 2004-05 season when UNO won twice, 7-3 and 4-3. This will be the only regular season meetings for the teams this season.
Last Week
The Mavericks skated to a 10-1 triumph over Niagara in the first round of the Mutual of Omaha Stampede, setting a handful of scoring records in the process. Brandon Scero became the first Mav to score four goals in a game and Alex Nikiforuk tied a record with a goal and four assists. Saturday night, Northern Michigan used a five-point night by tournament MVP Mike Santorelli to win the championship, 5-2. Santorelli had a goal and three assists in the game. Adam Bartholomay and Nick Fanto scored for the Mavericks. Western Michigan split its second straight CCHA series, losing 2-1 Friday to Ferris State before rebounding with a 5-3 victory Saturday.

UNO used a strong second half to springboard into a tie for fourth place in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association. The Mavericks then went on to earn their first-ever trip to the NCAA tournament, losing in the first round to Boston University. The Mavericks finished the season 20-15-6. Western Michigan posted a 10-24-6 overall mark and was 7-16-5 in the CCHA, finishing 11th.
