Mavericks Host Alaska in CCHA Series

Nebraska-Omaha continues Central Collegiate Hockey Association play this weekend when it hosts Alaska on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 3-4. Faceoff at the Qwest Center Omaha will be at 7:05 p.m. each night.

The games will be broadcast on KKAR, 1290 AM, with the pre-game show beginning 30 minutes before face-off. Greg Harrington will call the action, with Terry Leahy providing color commentary.
The Records
UNO opened CCHA play with a sweep of Western Michigan to improve to 3-1-2 overall. Alaska also swept a league series at home over Ferris State and is 4-1-1 overall. Both teams enter the weekend 2-0-0 in the conference.
The Coaches
Nebraska-Omaha's Mike Kemp is in his 10th season as the Maverick head coach. Kemp is a 1975 graduate of Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minn. The Duluth, Minn., native is 147-172-39 at UNO overall and has a 79-90-29 mark in the CCHA. Kemp is 7-17-6 vs. Alaska. Tavis MacMillan is in his third season at Alaska with a record of 39-33-10. MacMillan, a 1994 Alaska graduate, is 4-3-1 vs. the Mavericks. He led the team to an 18-16-5 mark a year ago, finishing eighth in the CCHA with a mark of 11-13-4.
The Series
Alaska holds a 17-7-6 mark in the all-time series between the two schools. In Omaha, UAF leads, 7-6-1. Last year, the teams split the two games played in Omaha, while the Mavericks earned a win and a tie in Fairbanks. The teams will meet again in a two-game series in Fairbanks Feb. 23-24 to close regular season play.
Last Week
UNO capitalized on its power play chances and swept Western Michigan by scores of 7-5 and 6-0 last weekend in its CCHA openers. The Mavericks came from two goals down in Friday's see-saw affair. Scott Parse finally put UNO up for good with a power play goal midway through the third period and Nenad Gajic sealed the win with an empty net goal in the final minute. Parse also had two assists in thegame. UNO scored on three of nine power plays. Saturday, the Mavericks scored on four of 10 power plays and added a shorthanded goal, backing the shutout goaltending of freshman Jeremie Dupont. Parse had a goal and two assists, Mick Lawrence had two goals and an assist and Juha Uotila three assists. Dupont made 24 saves.

UNO defeated the Nanooks 4-2 the first night before UAF earned a split with a 4-3 victory on Saturday.
Coming Up
The Mavericks hit the road for five straight games after this weekend, beginning with a Nov. 10-11 CCHA series at Michigan. The Mavericks then will travel to defending regular season champion Miami Nov. 17-18 before playing a non-confernece game at Minnesota State Nov. 21. UNO returns home for a Thanksgiving weekend series with Notre Dame Nov. 24-25.
