
Mavs Fall in Series Opener, 7-3

OXFORD, Ohio -- After spotting Nebraska-Omaha (3-5-3, 2-4-1 CCHA) the first goal, the Miami University Redhawks (9-4-0, 6-3-0 CCHA) rattled off four goals, and rolled to a 7-3 victory at Steve Cady Arena in Friday night's Central Collegiate Hockey Association action.
The Mavs got going early with an even strength goal by junior forward Brandon Scero at 1:16 into the first period with assists from senior forwards Bryan Marshall and Mick Lawrence.
Miami tied it at 13:26 with a power-play goal from Justin Mercier when he knocked the puck into the net just before he crashed into freshman goalie Jeremie Dupont. At 19:02 Miami took the lead with Jared Palmer's unassisted goal on a shot from the blue line.
In the second stanza, Miami built up a two-goal lead with even strength goals from Marty Guerin at 3:38 and Ryan Jones at 5:21.
The Mavs came within two when freshman forward Jeric Agosta scored his first collegiate goal from the left circle on a pass from sophomore Dan Charleston at 10:20.
Miami scored again on a five-on-three power play with a marker from Alec Martinez at 16:06.
In the third period the RedHawks extended their lead to four at 4:49 with a power-play goal from Nathan Davis.
Sophomore forward Tomas Klempa scored UNO's third goal on a power play a minute and three seconds later to make it 6-3 Miami.
Justin Mercier restored the four-goal lead with a shorthanded marker with 2:01 left in the game.
The Mavs and Redhawks will meet again Saturday night at 6:05 p.m. CST in Oxford.
