Guards Lead Mavs to Season-Opening Win

PUEBLO, Colo. -- The backcourt tandem of Karen Thies and Alyssa Green accounted for 41 points, leading the University of Nebraska-Omaha women's basketball team to a 70-55 win over Colorado State-Pueblo in its season opener Friday night at the Al Kaly Shrine Classic.
Thies, a 5-foot-4 senior, had a game-high 23 points. She also led the Mavericks with 11 rebounds for her seventh career double-double. Green, a freshman point guard playing her first career game, scored 18 points on 8-of-11 shooting, including 2-for-4 from 3-point range. She added four rebounds and four assists.
Sophomore Cayla Hargrove added 14 points and six rebounds off the bench.
UNO (1-0) got off to a fast start, taking a commanding 15-4 lead 10 minutes into the contest. The Mavs stayed in control, holding a 32-22 advantage going into the intermission. The second half started with more of the same, as UNO started with a 15-6 run.
The ThunderWolves (0-1) were led by Lindsay Black with 15 points.
The Mavericks next face Colorado-Colorado Springs Saturday at 2 p.m. Central time.
