Special Teams Lead Miami Past Mavs, 2-1

OXFORD, Ohio --Ryan Jones' breakaway shorthanded goal lifted Miami University to a 2-1 Central Collegiate Hockey Association win over the Mavericks Saturday night at Cady Arena.
The Redhawks' special teams also produced a power play goal in the third period to complete their sweep of UNO in the two-game series. Miami is now 10-4-0 overall and 7-3-0 in the CCHA. The loss, the fifth-straight for the Mavs, dropped them to 3-6-3 overall and 2-5-1 in the CCHA.
UNO held the Redhawks to 0-8 on power plays as the teams skated through two scoreless periods.
Miami's Nathan Davis scored 31 seconds into the third period on assists from Alec Martinez and Mitch Ganzak.
The Mavs tied on a four-on-four goal by senior forward Alex Nikiforuk with the assist from senior defensemen Phil Angell at 10:19.
The game-winning goal for Miami came from Ryan Jones on a breakaway at 16:44.
UNO is now down 6-11-2 overall and 1-7-2 in Oxford in the series against Miami.
The Mavs return to the ice Tuesday, Nov. 21 against Minnesota State, Mankato at 7:37 p.m. in the Midwest Wireless Civic Center in Mankato.
