Irish Strike Quick, Hold Off Mavs, 4-2

Notre Dame built a 3-0 lead, then held off a third-period rally by the Mavericks to post a 4-2 Central Collegiate Hockey Association victory over UNO Friday night in front of 6,039 at Qwest Center Omaha. The teams will complete their two-game series Saturday night at 7:35.
The Fighting Irish (10-2-1 and 5-1-1) struck just 65 seconds into the game on Erik Condra's fifth goal of the year, beating UNO netminder Eric Aarnio from just outside the crease.
Notre Dame made it 2-0 at 18:18 of the opening period on a goal by Josh Sciba and then added another goal just 3:15 into the second frame by Dan Kissel.
UNO (3-7-4 and 2-6-1) seized the momentum in the third period when Brandon Scero's long shot slipped through the glove of Irish goaltender David Brown and slid into the net at 2:09. Aarnio started the play by guiding the puck to Phil Angell, who passed ahead to Scero along the left wing boards just over the red line.
Angell slammed his first goal of the year past Brown out of a scramble in the crease 3:14 later to pull UNO within 3-2. Dan Charleston and Tomas Klempa earned assists on the play.
The Irish fought off the Mavericks and got some breathing room at 14:31 on Kevin Deeth's sixth goal of the year as he skated past a UNO defenseman and cut across the slot.
Each team finished with 20 shots in the game.
