Lopers Hand Mavericks 1st Loss, 90-75

KEARNEY, Neb. -- Nebraska-Kearney used a 10-2 late in the first half to pull ahead, then held off the Mavericks the second half to post a 90-75 non-conference win Tuesday night at the Health & Sports Center.
The Mavericks, who set a school record by connecting on 14 three-pointers, fell to 4-1, while UNK improved to 3-1. The previous record was 13 set in 2000-01 in a game at South Dakota.
Karen Thies led five players in double figures for UNO with 22 points, hitting 6 of 11 of her shots from behind the arc. Ashley Freerksen added 13 points, Ellen Majewski 12 and Alyssa Green and Lacey Geitzenhauer each had 10 points.
UNO never led in the game, but trailed just 18-15 midway through the first half when Thies hit a three. The Lopers then reeled off eight straight points to take a 26-15 lead before Freerksen stopped the run with another three.
Freerksen brought UNO within 33-25 when she hit a three with 3:35 left in the half, but the Lopers then went on a 10-2 scoring run to take a 43-27 lead in the final minute. Thies cut the halftime margin to 43-30 when she hit a three-pointer with 30 seconds left.
The Mavericks cut the margin into single digits just once in the second half, when Thies' three-pointer made it 75-66 with 5:02 left.
UNO shot 41.9 percent from the field and 42.4 from behind the arc, hitting 14 of 33 shots. UNK, which shot 53.6 percent the first half, finished at 50 percent for the game.
Liz Fischer and Jade Meads each scored 19 points to lead the Lopers.
UNO's next action will be this weekend when the Mavs host the DoubleTree Classic at Sapp Fieldhouse. UNO meets Adams State Saturday at 4 p.m. and Hawaii-Hilo Sunday afternoon at 2.
