Mavericks Fall in Exhibition Contest

LINCOLN, Neb. -- The University of Nebraska at Omaha women's basketball team got its first taste of action Saturday afternoon, falling 97-59 in an exhibition game with Nebraska-Lincoln in front of 1,513 fans at the Bob Devaney Sports Center.
Senior guard Karen Thies had a strong second half for the Mavericks, scoring 13 points, finishing the game with a team-high 16. Freshman point guard Alyssa Green chipped in 11 points. Senior forward Ashley Freerksen was the leading rebounder with eight boards.
The Huskers held a 46-23 advantage at halftime, utilizing consistent full-court pressure to force the Mavs to commit 17 turnovers and shoot only 17 percent from the floor. UNL dominated on the glass, as well, out-rebounding UNO 29-21 rebounds, including 13 on the offensive side.
In the second half, the Mavs' shooting improved greatly, as they hit 42 percent on field goal tries, including 5-for-8 from 3-point range, with Thies going 3-for-5.
Nicole Neals was the leading scorer for the Huskers, also with 16 points, adding four steals.
The Mavericks begin their regular season Nov. 17 at the Al Kaly Shrine Classic against the host team, Colorado State-Pueblo.
