PUEBLO, Colo. -- Michael Jenkins scored a career-high 25 points and the Mavericks survived a last-second three-point miss by Regis for a 69-67 victory Friday night in the first round of the Chuck Stephens Classic. UNO, now 4-3, will meet the host school, Colorado State-Peublo Saturday night at 9 CST.
UNO, which trailed only briefly early in the opening minutes, led 33-31 at halftime and built an eight-point margin with 3:34 left in the game before Regis rallied to close within two. But Chris Brever's shot from behind the arc at the buzzer failed.
Denny Johnston added 13 points and five rebounds for UNO, which connected on 28 of 34 shots from the line (82 percent) and 19 of 44 from the field (43 percent).
Jenkins hit all five of his shots from the field, including two from behind the arc, and was 13-for-14 from the free throw line.
The other Maverick scorers included Jeremy Williams, who had eight points and a team-high eight rebounds, Zac Robinson, 7, Jerry Bennett and Matt Newman 6 and Grant Nieland, 4.
