Mavs Win as Parse Becomes Career Goal Leader

Scott Parse scored a pair of third period goals to become the Mavericks' all-time goal-scoring leader as UNO completed a sweep of Bentley with a 7-2 victory Sunday at Qwest Center Omaha. Parse also added an assist and Alex Nikiforuk had a goal and three assists as UNO improved to 8-7-4 in its final home appearance in over a month.
Parse, a senior from Portage, Mich., now has 66 goals for his career, passing David Brisson, who had 65 during his 1999-2003 career. He leads the Mavericks in scoring this year with 11 goals and 17 assists.
UNO broke open a 3-1 game in the final period with four goals on just nine shots. Parse's first came at 2:05. After Bentley answered with a power play goal by Nick DeCroo at 9:22, UNO tallied twice in just 63 seconds. Brandon Scero scored an unassisted goal at 9:56 and Parse connected at 10:59 on passes from Nikiforuk and Tomas Klempa.
Nikiforuk added his eighth of the year on an assist by Parse at 15:55 to close the scoring.
The Mavericks broke out quickly, scoring less than two minutes into the contest and outshooting the Falcons 15-1 the opening period while taking a 2-0 lead. Adam Bartholomay scored his sixth of the season at 1:42 and Mark Bernier his second at 12:05.
Bentley sliced the margin in half 2:06 into the second period when Marc Zwicky poked the puck past UNO goalie Jerad Kaufmann, but the Mavs got the two-goal margin back seven minutes later. Bryan Marshall came off the bench on a line shift and stole the puck just inside the blue line, then sent it into the slot for Mick Lawrence who scored his third of the year.
The Mavericks are idle until playing non-conference games at Princeton Dec. 29 and Yale Dec. 30.
