Thies Drops 28 as Mavs Roll, 81-47

Senior Karen Thies scored a season-high 28 points to help the University of Nebraska-Omaha women's basketball team back to the win column, handily defeating Adams State, 81-47, in the DoubleTree Classic Saturday afternoon at Sapp Fieldhouse.
Thies had a big first half, knocking down 7-of-10 shots, including 5-of-6 on 3-point tries, for 19 points. She went on to tie a career high by hitting six threes on the day. Thies added seven rebounds to tie Lacey Geitzenauer for the team lead, plus three assists and two steals.
UNO (5-1) never trailed in the game, getting out to 9-2 lead in the first three and a half minutes, extending the lead in the first half to as much as 24 points with 4:27 remaining. The Mavericks widened the gap to 30 points about midway through the second half, coasting to the 34-point victory.
A total of 11 different players scored for the Mavericks, with Cayla Hargrove scoring 10 off the bench. Ashley Freerksen added nine, with Alyssa Green and Geitzenauer adding six each.
Ashley Chambers led Adams State (2-4) with 18 points. The Grizzlies were held to 30.4 percent efficiency on field goal tries, while UNO hit on 47 percent of attempts, including 54.5 percent in the first half.
The Mavericks have scored more than 80 points in four of their six games so far this year.
The win was the 99th in the collegiate coaching career of Patty Patton Shearer. She goes for No. 100 Sunday at 2 p.m. when UNO takes on Hawaii-Hilo in the finale of the DoubleTree Classic. The Vulcans were defeated by Augustana, 84-49, earlier Saturday.
