Mavs Fall to Concordia on Buzzer-Beater, 79-76

After Michael Jenkins sank two free throws with 3.1 seconds remaining in regulation to tie the game, Concordia-St. Paul's Kyle Marxhausen hit a 3-point shot as time expired, lifting the Golden Bears to a 79-76 victory Sunday afternoon at Sapp Fieldhouse.
The Mavericks, now 9-5 on the season, played a crisp first half, holding a 44-35 advantage at the intermission. UNO moved the ball well, shooting 57 percent and recording assists on 13 of its 16 field goals.
But Concordia (9-2) opened the second half with a 15-4 run to take a two-point lead. The Golden Bears' big man, Drew Shepp, had little trouble scoring inside, dropping 18 second-half points. The Mavericks defense was hampered by the loss of center Jerry Bennett, who suffered an ankle injury early in the game.
Still, the teams remained tight through the rest of the second half, as the lead changed seven times and the score was tied 10 times.
In the closing moments, Marxhausen broke a 74-74 tie by hitting a running layup with nine second left, also drawing a foul. He missed the free throw, however, allowing UNO one last opportunity. Jenkins was fouled on a drive through the lane and calmly sank his two free throws.
UNO center Timir Patel had a career game in relief of the injured Bennett, scoring a team-high 17 points on 8-of-13 shooting, also leading the team in rebounds with nine. Jenkins finished with 13, while Zac Robinson scored 11, including three 3-pointers.
Shepp totalled 26 points to lead Concordia, adding a team-high eight rebounds. Marxhausen finished with 18.
The Mavericks return to action Thursday, opening North Central Conference play at Augustana, at 8 p.m.
