MSU Rallies, Downs UNO, 76-67

MANKATO, Minn. -- Minnesota State, Mankato rallied from 11 points down in the second half to post a 76-67 North Central Conference win over the Mavericks Saturday afternoon at the Taylor Center.
Senior forward Heather Peterson broke a tie with a three-pointer with 2:12 left and MSU made 10 straight free throws down the stretch to secure the win. The three-pointer gave MSU a 66-63 lead and launched a 7-0 run.
UNO junior guard Toni Kinsey hit two free shots with 1:02 left, trimming the MSU lead to 70-65, but Arin Andrews hit twice from the line seconds later and Jamie Kienitz added four more in the final 36 seconds.
The loss drops UNO to 16-10 on the season and 2-7 in the NCC, while Minnesota State moved its records to 12-12 and 3-6.
The teams traded the lead four times in the first half before UNO took a 30-29 lead into the break. UNO took control six minutes into the second half as Karen Thies scored on a layup to break a 40-40 tie and start a 10-0 Maverick run.
Ashley Freerksen, who scored 13 of her team-leading 16 points in the second half, followed with a jumper and senior JJ Smith hit two straight three-pointers. LaCheryl Prince capped the run with two free throws for a 50-40 lead.
After MSU broke a five-minute scoring drought with a short jumper by Anna Voltmar, Freerksen gave UNO its biggest lead with a three-pointer for a 53-42 advantage with 9:48 to play.
UNO then went without a field goal for nearly five minutes, allowing Minnesota State to whittle away until taking a 60-58 lead with 4:07 left on a shot by Alanna Wahl. Kinsey quickley answered with a three-pointer to give UNO its last lead, 61-60, with 3:50 to play.
Smith, who hit four of five shots from behind the arc, finished with 14 for UNO and Karen Thies added 10 points and a game-high 12 rebounds, giving her a third double-double this season and her second in four games.
Kienitz led MSU with 13 points, while Andrews and Flecia Foster each scored 12. Peterson finished with 10.
The Mavericks will be back on the road next weekend, playing at Minnesota Duluth Saturday afternoon at 1.
