Mavericks Edge Bulldogs, 78-74

DULUTH, Minn. -- The Mavericks fought off Minnesota Duluth Saturday afternoon to end a three-game losing skid and post a 78-74 North Central Conference victory in the first of two straight meetings with the Bulldogs.
Karen Thies hit two free throws and LaCheryl Prince made one of two free shots in the closing seconds to put the wraps on the win that boosted UNO to 17-10 on the season and 3-7 in the NCC. Minnesota Duluth fell to 16-9 and 3-7.
Both teams are in a fight to host a first-round game March 1 in the NCC's Wells Fargo Finals post-season tournament. UNO will play Minnesota Duluth again Thursday night at Sapp Fieldhouse before closing regular season play Saturday at home against Minnesota State, Mankato.
The Mavericks survived a back-and-forth first half with a 36-35 lead at the break as Thies scored 14 of her team-high 18 points. UNO then opened up three seven-point margins after halftime, but each time the Bulldogs bounced back to tie the game. And, each time the Mavericks answered with another run to regain the lead.
Cayla Hargrove put UNO on top 74-71 with 36 seconds left, but 12 seconds later the Bulldogs' Kaite Winkelman tied the game with a three-pointer. Maverick senior JJ Smith was fouled immediately and hit her second free throw for a 75-74 lead. After a UMD miss, Thies was fouled and hit her two shots from the line for a 77-74 lead.
UMD had another chance, but missed and Prince was fouled, making one shot to ensure the win, the first-ever over Minnesota Duluth in five meetings.
Cayla Hargrove scored 13 of her 15 points the second half and hit all six of her free throws to help the Mavs maintain the lead.
Besides Thies and Hargrove, JJ Smith added 12 points, Toni Kinsey 11 and Lacey Geitzenhauer 10.
Lindsey Dietz, the NCC's leading scorer, who had missed five straight games with a knee injury for the Bulldogs, played with a brace and scored a game-high 26 points.
UNO hit 30 of 37 foul shots for the game, compared to UMD's 17-26 shooting.
