Mavericks Host 2 Key NCC Games This Week

The Mavericks face the teams they need to beat in order to secure a home game in the first round of the Wells Fargo Finals March 1 when they return to Sapp Fieldhouse this week. UNO closes regular season play with home games against Minnesota Duluth Thursday and Minnesota State, Mankato Saturday. Both tip-off at 6 p.m.
Maverick seniors JJ Smith and LaCheryl Prince will be honored prior to the Minnesota State contest.
The Nos. 2-3-4 teams will host Nos. 5-6-7 that night. UNO, Minnesota Duluth and Minnesota State are tied at 3-7 in the NCC for fourth place.
Radio
The game will be broadcast, with David Gustafson calling the action, on KOZN, 1620 AM.
Records & Series
UNO is 17-10 overall this season and is 3-7 in NCC games. The Mavericks have lost three straight games. Minnesota Duluth is 16-9 and 3-7. UNO defeated the Bulldogs last Saturday for its first win in five meetings in the series. Minnesota State, 12-13 and 2-7, trails UNO 27-19 in the series. MSU defeated UNO in Mankato Feb. 11, 76-67. MSU will play at North Dakota on Thursday night before coming to Omaha.

The Mavericks saw three seven-point leads evaporate the second half, but scratched out a 78-74 win at Minnesota Duluth Saturday afternoon in their only outing of the week. Karen Thies led UNO with 18 points and Cayla Hargrove scored 13 of her 15 points the second half. Lindsey Dietz led UMD with 26 points.
Coaching Staff
Head Coach Patty Patton Shearer is beginning her second season as the head coach at UNO and has a 31-24 mark. Overall in five seasons in college she is 91-73 She compiled a 60-49 record over four seasons at Fort Lewis College before becoming UNO's head coach in the summer of 2004. She is a 1990 graduate of Rocky Mountain College. Her assistants, all in their second seasons at UNO as well, are Jason Flores, Brad Schick and Maurtice Ivy.
The Opponents
Minnesota Duluth is led by the league's leading scorer, Lindsey Dietz, who scored 26 points Saturday, her first game back after missing five games with a knee injury. Minnesota State is led by Arin Andrews, who is averaging 13.9 points and 8.7 rebounds per game.
Looking Ahead
The Mavericks need to finish fourth in order to host a first round game March 1 in the Wells Fargo Finals. If they do, they would host the No. 5 finisher at Sapp Fieldhouse. If not, they would play that night on the road. The semifinal and final games of the tournament will be in Grand Forks, N.D., March 4-5.
