Mavericks Finish Strong to Down UMD

The Mavericks shook off Minnesota Duluth with a 27-6 scoring run in the second half to post their second straight North Central Conference win over the Bulldogs, 82-70, Thursday night at Lee & Helene Sapp Fieldhouse.
Five Mavericks scored in double figures and Ashley Freerksen recorded her first career double-double as UNO moved to 18-10 on the season and took over fourth-place in the league. UMD fell to 16-10 and 3-8 to fall back to a sixth-place tie with South Dakota and Minnesota State, Mankato.
UNO and Minnesota State will square off Saturday night at 6 in the regular season finale, with a chance to host a first-round game March 1 in the NCC Wells Fargo Finals tournament.
Karen Thies and Toni Kinsey each scored 17 points to lead UNO, while Freerksen added 14 points and a game-high 11 rebounds. Katie Winkelman's 23 points and 19 from Lindsey Dietz led UMD.
The teams battled through six lead changes and four ties the first half before a pair of free throws with 10 seconds left gave UNO a 38-36 halftime lead. It was just as close the opening eight minutes of the second half as the lead changed seven more times before the Bulldogs forged a 53-50 lead with 11:57 left on Kim Wagers' layup, capping a 6-0 run.
UNO scored nine straight points, with Thies scoring five in a row, to take the lead for good, and held the Bulldogs to just two field goals over an eight-minute span. Thies and Freerksen each connected on a pair of three-pointers during the 27-6 run that put UNO out front 77-59 with 3:17 to play.
The win was the second in a row over the Bulldogs. UNO posted a 78-74 victory last Saturday in Duluth.
