UNO Splits in Cougar Classic

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. -- Lauren McArthur drove in four runs and the Mavericks took advantage of two Missouri Western errors in the bottom of the sixth inning for a season-opening 5-4 win in the Cougar Classic Friday morning. Host Southern Illinois-Edwardsville then handed UNO its first loss, 5-3, in the afternoon game.
The Mavs will play twice more on Saturday, facing Ferris State at 9 a.m. and Saint Joseph's at 11 a.m.
McArthur, a senior first baseman from Hazelwood, Mo., tripled in a run in the first inning to give UNO a 1-0 lead against Missouri Western. After the Griffons tied the game, she belted a three-run homer in the bottom of the third for a 4-1 lead.
The Griffons again came back to tie the game against UNO starter Taren Tuley in the fifth, however. In the sixth, senior Shilo Jorgensen and junior Sara Sortino walked and freshman Brooke Wagner reached on an error to load the bases with two outs. Sophomore center fielder Alison Jergenson's grounder to short was bobbled, allowing Jorgensen to score.
Papillion sophomore Cayte Billman came on in the sixth to record the win for the Mavericks.
In the second game, third baseman Leslie Svoboda, who went 3-for-4, singled in a run in the top of the first to give UNO a 1-0 lead over SIU-Edwardsville. The Cougars tied the game in the bottom of the inning and took a 4-1 lead on Alicia Deshasier's three-run homer in the third.
Brianna Cataudella singled in a run for UNO in the fourth, cutting the SIU lead to 4-2, but the Cougars took a 5-2 lead in the sixth off starter and loser Billman (1-1). Cheris Kuster came in to record the final out.
Svoboda tripled in the seventh to drive in the final run for the Mavericks. For the game Svoboda had a single, double and triple.
