Mavs Skate to 5-5 Tie with Broncos

KALAMAZOO, Mich.--Five different Mavericks scored goals Friday night as UNO skated to a 5-5 tie with Western Michigan at Lawson Ice Arena.
UNO (18-11-6, 12-9-6 CCHA) took a 5-2 lead on Adam Bartholomay's goal at 6:24 of the third period but Western Michigan scored three unanswered goals in the final 7:22 to tie the score.
The Mavericks still sit in fourth place in the CCHA standings with 30 points, two ahead of Northern Michigan. UNO can clinch the fourth place spot with one point or a Wildcat loss or tie.
Western Michigan opened scoring just 58 seconds into the game with a power play goal by Paul Szczechura. The Mavs tied the score at 12:44 of the period on Bill Thomas' 25th goal of the year. Thomas' tally broke the school record for goals in a season, held by former Mav Jeff Hoggan.
UNO took lead in the second period when Kaleb Betts scored unassisted at 2:40 and then built a two-goal lead when Brandon Scero added his ninth tally of the year at 5:43 for a 3-1 advantage.
WMU's Dave Krisky made it a one-goal game at 6:50 of the second stanza but UNO's Alex Nikiforuk gave UNO another two-goal lead just 55 seconds later when he knocked home a rebound to make the score 4-2.
Mike Lesperance, Daryl Moore and Chris Frank each recorded goals to stage the Bronco comeback after Bartholomay's goal in the final period.
With the tie, UNO's unbeaten streak stands at 10 games (6-0-4) and is a new school record.
The Mavs close out the series with the Broncos on Saturday night at 6:35.
