Broncos Drop Mavs, 6-3

KALAMAZOO, Mich.-Western Michigan snapped Nebraska-Omaha's school record 10-game unbeaten streak with a 6-3 win over the Mavericks on Saturday night at Lawson Ice Arena.
UNO (18-12-6, 12-10-6 CCHA) finished fifth in the CCHA regular season standings and will host 12th place Bowling Green (13-21-2, 8-18-2 CCHA) in a best-of-three first round playoff series at the Qwest Center March 3-5. Faceoff for the games will be at 7:05 p.m.
Western Michigan grabbed a 2-0 lead in the opening period on goals by Jeff LoVecchio and Kevin Labatte. LoVecchio scored on the power play at 12:48 and Labatte scored an even strength tally two seconds after UNO returned a man from the penalty box.
Paul Szchechura gave the Broncos a 3-0 lead at the 8:31 of the second period before UNO got on the board. The Mavericks' Brandon Scero recorded a power play goal at 10:49, extending his goal scoring streak to six games to make the score 3-1. WMU went up 4-1 when Brent Walton scored with just 29 seconds left in the period.
UNO staged a third period comeback when Dan Charleston scored just a minute into the final frame, followed by a Kaleb Betts power play goal with 10:42 remaining to make the score 4-3.
The Mavericks were granted a power play late in the final minutes of the third period but failed to convert and Western Michigan tacked on two empty net goals in the final 1:11 to seal the victory.
