EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. -- Leslie Svoboda collected three hits and drove in a pair of runs to lead the Mavericks to a 5-3 win Saturday morning over Ferris State in the Cougar Classic. Saint Joseph's handed UNO a 4-1 loss in the second game of the tournament to drop the Mavericks to 2-2 on the weekend.
Svoboda's two-run double in the bottom of the fifth sparked a three-run inning for the Mavericks to break a 1-1 tie. UNO added another run in the bottom of the sixth as Kellyn Kramolisch doubled and scored on a double by Katie Novotny.
The Bulldogs rallied in the top of the seventh, scoring a pair of runs off UNO starter and winner Taren Tuley, but Cayte Billman came on in relief to get the final out and record her first save of the year.
In the second game, Saint Joseph's freshman lefthander Sara Somogyi gave up just three hits and struck out 12 to get the win. She blanked the Mavs until the seventh when Svoboda singled and scored on a double by Lauren McArthur. Cheris Kuster took the loss for UNO.
The Mavericks will play again March 4-5 in the Missouri Western Regional Crossover Tournament in St. Joseph, Mo.
