Mavericks Fall Short of Vikings, 64-59

Augustana took advantage of a second-half scoring drought by the Mavericks to post a 64-59 North Central Conference triumph Saturday night at Lee & Helene Sapp Fieldhouse.
The loss, after two straight wins, drops the Mavericks to 16-8 on the year and to 2-5 in the NCC, while the Vikings improved to 17-6 and 5-3.
Karen Thies scored eight straight points, including a pair of three-pointers, to help UNO pull away to a 37-31 halftime lead. The Mavs built that up to as many as seven, 41-34, early in the second half before the Vikings responded with a 9-0 run.
After Cayla Hargrove gave UNO a 48-47 lead with 10:26 to play, the Viking defense shut down the Mavs, holding them without a field goal for 9:44. Ashley Holiday hit six points for Augustana in a 10-3 run over that stretch to give the Vikings a 57-51 lead.
Cayla Hargrove ended the cold spell with a layup to pull UNO within 57-53 with 2:17 left, but the Mavericks could get no closer than three points the rest of the way as Jessica Klein connected on five straight free shots down the stretch.
Klein led the way for Augustana with 20 points and was 10 for 11 from the line, missing her last attempt. Alison Adamson added 17 points and five assists and Andrea Seefeldt 14 points.
JJ Smith, No. 10 in career scoring, led UNO with 15 points, pushing her to 1,212 for her career. Thies added 14 and Hargrove 11, in addition to a game-high eight rebounds.
UNO, which shot 42.1 percent the first half, cooled to 32 percent the second and 38.1 for the game to Augustana's 45.1 percent.
The Mavericks will now play three straight road games in the NCC, beginning with next Thursday's contest at St. Cloud State.
