Wildcats Knock Off Mavs, 4-1

MARQUETTE, Mich.--Northern Michigan extended its winning streak to five games with a 4-1 victory over Nebraska-Omaha in the opening night of CCHA quarterfinal action at the Berry Events Center on Friday night.
UNO (20-13-6) will need to win Saturday and Sunday in the best-of-three series against the Wildcats (21-14-2) for the right to advance to the CCHA Championship in Detroit, Mich., March 17-18.
The two teams combined for three power play goals in the opening 20 minutes. Northern Michigan grabbed a 1-0 lead at the 4:06 mark when Matt Siddall redirected a slap shot from the point. UNO tied the game at 16:22 when Bill Thomas scored on a wrist shot from the slot on the Mavs' fourth power play of the period. NMU went up 2-1 just 95 seconds later when Dirk Southern knocked in a rebound in front of the net.
Northern Michigan extended its lead to 3-1 on another redirected shot by Rob Lehtinen with 11:20 remaining in the second stanza.
Lehtinen, who had two goals on the season entering Friday's game, struck again for his second goal of the evening with 13 minutes remaining in the contest, knocking in a loose puck from the side of the net to give the Wildcats a 4-1 lead.
UNO outshot NMU 26-18 in the contest. The Mavs were 1-for-6 on the power play while the Wildcats were 2-for-5.
NMU netminder Bill Zaniboni had 25 saves and UNO goaltender Jerad Kaufmann had 14 saves in the losing effort.
