Mavericks Split With Bearcats

MARYVILLE, Mo. -- Lyle Lafountain drove in three runs and Bryan Frew had a pair of RBIs to lead the Mavericks to an 11-8 win over Northwest Missouri State in the first game of a doubleheader Saturday. The Bearcats rallied in the second game to pull out an 11-8 win for a split.
UNO, now 13-4 on the season, will play a non-conference doubleheader Sunday at Emporia State, with the first pitch at noon. Northwest Missouri State is now 5-7.
Lafountain got the Mavs off quickly in the opener with a two-run homer, his second of the year. Frew then ignited a five-run fourth inning for the Mavericks with a two-run double, producing a 7-2 lead. Lafountain added an RBI single in the Mavs' four-run sixth inning.
Left-hander Josh Lundin got the win for UNO to improve to 2-0.
In the second game, the Bearcats jumped out front with two in the first and a five-run third. UNO battled back with single runs in the second and third, and then drew within 7-5 on Matt Meyer's three-run homer in the fifth. The Maverick took the lead on another three-run shot in the sixth by James Adams.
The Bearcats rallied on a walk, hit batsman and three infield singles in the bottom of the sixth and took the lead on a two-run double by Ryley Westman.
