Svoboda's Hot Bat Helps UNO Extend Streak

QUINCY, Ill. -- Sophomore third baseman Leslie Svoboda hit four home runs, collected seven RBIs, and went 8-for-9 to lead the 14th-ranked University of Nebraska at Omaha softball team to three victories Saturday at the Quincy University Invitational. The Mavericks defeated host Quincy, 6-4, in the opener, edged Wartburg, 2-1, and shut out Grand Valley State, 6-0, to improve to 21-3 overall and extend their win streak to 16 games.
All three Maverick pitchers picked up victories on the day.
In the first game against Quincy, Svoboda went 4-for-4 with a double, a home run and four RBIs. Sophomore Alison Jergenson went 2-for-3 at the plate. Sophomore Cayte Billman picked up the victory to improve to 8-2 on the season.
Senior Shilo Jorgensen got the Maverick offense going in the second game with an RBI double in the second inning, driving in freshman Amanda Bader. Bader was pinch running for senior Lauren McArthur who reached first on an error.
The Mavericks extended the lead to 2-0 on Svoboda's solo homer in the fourth inning. Wartburg scored one run in the sixth inning to close the gap to 2-1 but could get no closer.
Junior Taren Tuley remained perfect on the mound, improving her record to 9-0 with the win over Wartburg.
Svoboda blasted two solo home runs, while going 2-for-2 with two RBIs in the Mavericks' win over Grand Valley State. She now has a team-high nine home runs on the season.
McArthur went 2-for-4 with three RBIs and a home run. Her three-run shot in the seventh inning helped put the game out of reach.
Junior Cheris Kuster improved to 4-1 on the season while notching her third shutout. She allowed just three hits with six strikeouts and no walks. Kuster has allowed just one earned run this season.
The Mavericks will continue action at the Quincy Invitational on Sunday with an 11 a.m game against Lake Superior State and a 1 p.m. contest with Missouri-St. Louis.
