Mavs Shut Out 2 More, Streak Grows to 18

QUINCY, Ill. -- Behind Leslie Svoboda's hitting and solid Maverick pitching, the 14th-ranked University of Nebraska at Omaha softball team shut out two opponents on Sunday at the Quincy University Invitational to improve its record to 23-3 and extend its win streak to 18 games. The Mavericks defeated Lake Superior State, 7-0, and Missouri St. Louis, 2-0, to finish the tournament with a perfect 5-0 mark.
In the first game, Svoboda hit for the cycle, going 4-for-4 with a single, double, triple and home run, along with two RBIs and three runs scored. Junior Taren Tuley threw a three-hit shutout, her fifth of the season. Tuley finished with eight strikeouts while improving to 10-0.
Svoboda, who hit at least one home run in each of the tournament's five games, got the Mavericks on the board in the second game against UMSL, with a solo shot in the fourth inning. Svoboda finished the game 1-for-2 while garnering one intentional walk and one hit-by-pitch.
Senior Shilo Jorgensen gave the Mavericks an insurance run in the top of the seventh inning when she drove in Svoboda to give UNO a 2-0 lead.
Junior Cheris Kuster struck out eight UMSL batters while allowing just three hits and one walk to improve to 5-1 with her fourth shutout of the year. Kuster has not allowed an earned run in 38 consecutive innings.
For the weekend, Svoboda went 13-for-15 with six home runs, 2 doubles, 1 triple, 10 RBIs and 11 runs scored.
The Mavericks return to action on Tuesday, Mar. 28, when they head to Vermillion, S.D. for a 3:30 p.m. North Central Conference doubleheader with South Dakota.
