Mavs Sweep USD to Open NCC Play

VERMILLION, S.D. -- Brianna Cataudella hit a pair of homers to lift No. 14 UNO to an 8-2 win over South Dakota in the opening game and the Mavericks exploded for 10 runs in the final two innings to down the Coyotes 13-5 to gain a sweep in the North Central Conference openers for both teams Wednesday. The Mavs extended their winning streak to 20 to improve to 25-3.
The school record for consecutive wins in one season is 23, set in 1993. The Mavericks also won 23 straight over a two-season span in 2001-02 when they opened 2002 with 19 straight wins after closing the 2001 season with four victories to capture the national championship.
Cataudella singled home a run in a three-run first inning for UNO in the first game and added solo homers in the third and sixth to back the 10-strikeout complete game effort by Cheris Kuster, who scattered seven hits to improve to 6-1.
In the second game, Leslie Svoboda staked UNO to a 2-0 lead with a two-run homer, her 12th of the year, in the top of the first. The Coyotes came back to score four times in the bottom of the inning, however.
USD led 5-3 after three before UNO came back with a six-run fourth inning, highlighted by Shilo Jorgensen's three-run homer. The Mavericks added four more runs on five hits in the fifth, with Sara Sortino stroking a two-run double. Svoboda also singled in a run and Lauren McArthur doubled in another.
Taren Tuley came on in relief of starter Cayte Billman to get the win and improve to 11-0.
South Dakota fell to 12-14 and 0-2.
UNO will resume NCC action Friday, hosting Minnesota State, Mankato in a doubleheader at Claussen-Westgate Field, 82nd and D Streets. The first game starts at 3 p.m.
