Second-Half Burst by UND Sinks Mavs

GRAND FORKS, N.D. -- North Dakota scored 11 straight points early in the second half to break open a tight game and go on to an 83-69 win over the Mavericks in the semifinals of the Wells Fargo Finals Saturday in front of 2,264 at Betty Engelstad Arena.
UNO bowed out of the North Central Conference post-season tournament at 20-11, while North Dakota, 31-0, will meet Augustana in the championship game at 3 p.m. Sunday. Augustana edged No. 9 St. Cloud State, 80-77, in the other semifinal game Saturday.
UNO never held the lead, but after spotting the Fighting Sioux the first eight points in the game, the Mavericks battled back. A 10-3 run was fueled by a three-point play by Toni Kinsey and a three-pointer from Karen Thies and Lacey Geitzenhauer's jumper pulled UNO within 11-10 five minutes into the game.
Geitzenhauer scored seven of the next eight Maverick points, again pulling UNO within a point at 18-17, but the Fighting Sioux answered with a three-pointer by Amy Mahlum and never gave up the lead.
UND pulled ahead by 43-37 in the final minute on Ashley Langen's short jumper, but the Mavericks cut the halftime deficit to 43-39 on Carlye Jones' shot with eight seconds left.
Ashley Freerksen hit a two-point shot and Kinsey a three-pointer and a free shot, putting UNO within 48-45 with 17:38 to play, but the Sioux then sped away as Langen hit two free throws and a field goal and later added another jumper in an 11-0 run over the next 3:12.
Cayla Hargrove finally ended a stretch of 4:32 without a field goal by knocking down a three to end the run, but UNO couldn't escape a double-digit deficit the rest of the way.
North Dakota launched a 12-2 run, building a 71-50 advantage with eight minutes left.
The Mavericks closed the game with a 9-3 run with Geitzenhauer scoring twice. Hargrove led the Mavericks with a career-high 19 points while Geitzenhauer and Kinsey finished with 13 points apiece. Senior forward JJ Smith scored six points, hiking her career total to 1,300 to move into No. 9. UNO's other senior, LaCheryl Prince, had two points.
UNO, which shot 43.3 percent the first half, struggled the second, hitting just 26.7 percent to finish at 35 to North Dakota's 51.7 percent.
Langen connected on 10 of 15 shots to lead the Sioux with 26 points and seven rebounds. Boese added 17 points and Maffin 12.
