Mavs Go 1-2 in UNO Tournament

The Mavericks built their winning streak to 21 games Saturday before suffering a pair of late-inning losses in the UNO Softball Tournament at Seymour Smith Complex. No. 14 ranked UNO, now 26-5, will play just once Sunday, meeting Truman State at 11 a.m.
UNO downed Wayne State 6-2, then lost to Washburn, 4-2, and dropped a one-hitter to Northwest Missouri State, 1-0, Saturday.
Sara Sortino had a pair of hits and drove in two runs and Katie Novotny went 3-for-3 to back the five-hit pitching of Cayte Billman for a 6-2 win over Wayne State in the opening game of the 11-team event.
Sortino stroked a two-run double to break the game open in the bottom of the sixth, keying a three-run inning for the Mavericks.
In the second game, the Mavs went up 2-0 in the second, but Washburn tied the game in the bottom of the inning. The Lady Blues took the lead on a triple by Kala Huske and a single by Brooke DeVader in the fifth and added an insurance run in the sixth on an RBI double by Autumn Hauck.
In the final game, Lindsay Stephenson spoiled a bid for a perfect game by UNO's Cheris Kuster with an inside the park home run in the top of the seventh inning.
Kuster, who struck out 12 in the game and at one point fanned seven straight, had retired 19 in a row before Stephenson, an Omaha native, stroked a line drive to left center for her seventh home run of the season.
Kelly Morris gave up just four hits and the Mavericks stranded seven runners. It was the first time this year that UNO has lost back-to-back games.
The 21-game winning streak is the second longest in a single season by a Maverick team and fell two short of the record set in 1993.
