Streak Grows to 14 with Sweep of SMSU

MARSHALL, Minn.--The Nebraska-Omaha baseball team's winning streak improved to 14 games with a doubleheader sweep of Southwest Minnesota State Monday, winning by identical scores of 4-2.
Brian Goliber snapped a 2-2 tie in the ninth inning of the opener with a two-out two-run single. Blake Denoyer (3-0) earned the victory with three innings of scoreless relief and escaped a bases loaded jam in the final frame.
UNO (29-7) led 1-0 after the first inning when Lyle Lafountain doubled and later scored on an RBI groundout by Brian Frew.
UNO trailed 2-1 after five innings until Evan Porter's RBI single in the sixth inning.
SMSU stranded 16 runners in the contest and left the bases loaded three times while also getting two runners thrown out at the plate.
In the second game, UNO went ahead 2-0 in the second inning after Derrick Kendrick's two-run double drove in Tyler Cloyd and James Adams.
The Mustangs cut the lead in half with a run in the fourth but UNO went ahead 4-1 on Porter's two-run single in the seventh inning.
Shawn Smith relieved starter Ryan Lafountain in the last inning to record the final two outs of the ballgame, picking up his fifth save of the season.
