Seniors Lead Mavs in Sweep

UNO seniors Katie Novotny, Lauren McArthur and Shilo Jorgensen combined for six RBIs to help the Mavericks sweep a North Central Conference doubleheader from Minnesota State, Mankato Tuesday by scores of 3-2 and 7-1 at Claussen-Westgate Field as the Mavericks closed their regular season home schedule.
UNO moved to 37-9 overall and padded its first-place record in the NCC to 7-1, while MSU fell to 24-22 and 4-4.
UNO grabbed a 1-0 lead in the second inning of the opener as Brooke Wagner singled in McArthur, but MSU went ahead in the top of the fourth on a two-run homer by Ashley Jay.
In the bottom of the inning, Novotny drilled a double to center to drive in Leslie Svoboda and McArthur. Cheris Kuster (13-3) retired 9 of the next 10 batters to preserve the win.
In the nightcap, Jorgensen belted a three-run home run to spark a four-run first inning for UNO. The Mavericks added another run in the second as Sara Sortino singled and later scored on a wild pitch for a 5-0 lead.
Minnesota State cut the lead with a run in the third on a single by Kari Hudson to drive in Kimberley Merrick, but MSU left the bases loaded against UNO starter Taren Tuley (14-4).
UNO added single runs in the fourth on Svoboda's sacrifice fly and in the fifth on a double by Alison Jergenson.
The Mavericks will now go on the road for NCC doubleheaders at Minnesota Duluth on Friday and at St. Cloud State on Saturday. Both twin-bills will start at noon.
