Svoboda Drives in 7, Sets HR Mark

DULUTH, Minn. -- Leslie Svoboda hit two home runs, including a grand slam, and drove in seven Friday in leading the No. 11 Mavericks to a 15-4, six-inning first-game victory over Minnesota Duluth. Taren Tuley tossed a four-hitter in the second game to spark a 1-0 UNO win for the sweep.
The Mavericks, who have won five straight, are now 39-9 overall and 9-1 in the North Central Conference before a Saturday doubleheader at noon at St. Cloud State. A sweep by UNO would clinch the NCC regular season title.
Svoboda's two homers give her 16 on the year to break the record set by assistant coach Michala Cimino in 1994. It was the second time this year that Svoboda has connected for two home runs in a game, while the five RBIs mark a season high.
Svoboda, a sophomore from Lincoln, gave UNO the early lead with a two-run shot in the first and ended the scoring with a grand slam in the Mavericks' six-run sixth inning. She also had two doubles and a single in going 5-for-5 to hike her batting average to .487.
The Mavericks belted a season-high 18 hits in the game.
In the second game, Tuley struck out four in going the distance to improve her record to 15-4. The Mavericks scored in the top of the second on a two-out single by Alison Jergenson to drive in Brooke Wagner, who had singled and advanced with two out on an error.
