No. 11 UNO, Vikings Trade Shutouts

Cheris Kuster tossed a three-hitter and Katie Novotny drove in a pair of first-inning runs to lead the Mavericks to a 5-0 win over Augustana to gain a split in a North Central Conference doubleheader Wednesday at Claussen-Westgate Field. The Vikings won the opener, 2-0.
No. 11 UNO is now 27-6 overall and 3-1 in the NCC, while Augustana is 11-12 and 3-1.
Katie Krauth gave up just four hits and struck out six, including three in the final inning, to lead the Vikings' win in the opener.
Jessica Cooper stroked a lead-off double in the first for the Vikings and scored on a single by Kristi Villar. Augustana added an insurance run in the seventh on three straight singles by Ally Rutherford, Erika Wolner and Abbie Friesen. The Mavericks threatend in the seventh with two of their four hits, but Krauth, now 8-2, struck out Brianna Cataudella to end the game.
In the second game, the Mavericks struck for two runs in the first on Novotny's bases-loaded, two-out single up the middle to score Sara Sortino and Alison Jergenson, who reached on base hits.
In the third, Lauren McArthur doubled home Svoboda and scored on a double by Cataudella to double the lead to 4-0. Jergenson singled, stole second and scored on a single by Svoboda in the fourth for UNO's final run.
McArthur also doubled in the sixth inning to become the school's career leader in doubles with 54.
Kuster struck out eight to improve to 7-2 in registering her fifth shutout of the season.
The Mavericks will be back in action Friday, hosting North Dakota in a 1 p.m. doubleheader at Claussen-Westgate Field.
