UNO Sweeps Sioux, Scarpello Gets No. 300

OMAHA, Neb. -- The 11th-ranked University of Nebraska at Omaha softball team improved to 29-6 and 5-1 in the North Central Conference with a doubleheader sweep over NCC foe North Dakota at Claussen-Westgate Field Friday afternoon. The Mavericks edged the Sioux 3-2 in the first game and then defeated UND 8-0 in five innings in the nightcap. With the first game victory, Head Coach Jeanne Tostenson Scarpello picked up her 300th career win, all at UNO. Scarpello is now 301-82-1 (.785) in her seventh Maverick season. In the first game, the Mavericks escaped with a 3-2 victory as Leslie Svoboda scored on a wild pitch by Sioux pitcher Tara Peterson in the bottom of the seventh inning with the score tied a 2. Svoboda doubled to start the inning, then advanced to third on a wild pitch, before ending the game with Peterson's second wild pitch. The Mavericks, who were down 2-0 going into the bottom of the sixth innning, tied the game on freshman Brooke Wagner's triple to left center that drove in seniors Shilo Jorgensen and Katie Novotny. Wagner went 2-for-3 with 2 RBIs and a triple, while Svoboda was 3-for-4 with 2 doubles and 1 run scored. Junior pitcher Cheris Kuster improved to 8-2 on the season while recording a season-high 16 strikeouts and allowing just three hits with one walk. In the second game, Svoboda blasted a three-run home run, her 13th of the season, to highlight a four-run third inning, as the Mavericks eight-run ruled the Sioux in five innings. The Mavericks got four more runs in the fourth inning, powered by sophomore Alison Jergenson's two-run double to centerfield. Svoboda went 2-for-3 in the game with four RBIs and one run scored while Jergensen was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Junior Taren Tuley allowed just two hits while striking out 10 Sioux batters to improve to 12-2 on the season. The Mavericks will return to action on Tuesday, Apr. 11 when they host 18th-ranked Northwest Missouri State in a 3 p.m. non-conference doubleheader at Claussen-Westgate Field.
