Krauth Leads Augustana Over UNO, 2-0

EMPORIA, Kan. -- Two-time North Central Conference player of the year Katie Krauth provided the pitching and the hitting Friday in Augustana's 2-0 second-round win over UNO. Krauth tossed a four-hitter and slugged a two-run home run for the Vikings, in the NCAA II North Central Regional at Glennon Field.
The Mavericks, 46-12 and ranked No. 8, will face 40-14 Northwest Missouri State Saturday at 10 a.m. in an elimination game.
"We were trying to pitch around her and not give her anything good to hit," UNO coach Jeanne Scarpello said.
Jessica Cooper opened the game with a single for Augustana (37-20). Liz Bartak then reached on a fielder's choice and UNO starter Cheris Kuster retired Kristi Villar. She threw three straight balls to Krauth before the senior hit an opposite field smash to right for her seventh home run of the year.
Krauth also won the first-round game with a ninth-inning, two-run homer for the Vikings to produce a 4-2 win over Southwest Minnesota State.
The Mavericks managed just four singles off Krauth in the game, two by Lauren McArthur. UNO threatened in the fourth on one-out singles by McArthur and Shilo Jorgensen. Both advanced on a ground out by Brooke Wagner, but Krauth fanned Brianna Cataudella to end the threat.
In the sixth, McArthur singled off the glove of the first baseman and Jorgensen drew a two-out walk, but Villar, the Augustana shortstop, speared a line drive by Wagner to end the inning.
Kuster took the loss, falling to 18-4, before being relieved in the fifth by Taren Tuley.
"Krauth just seems to keep getting stronger as the game goes on," Scarpello said. "It's tough to string anything together against her."
Scarpello said she was undecided on Saturday's starting pitcher. If the Mavericks, who have gone 2-2 vs. Northwest Missouri State this year, advance, they will play another game at 5:30 p.m. Saturday.
"Northwest is a good hitting team," Scarpello said. "We need to get a good pitching performance."
