Mav Season Ends in 8-Inning Loss, 1-0

EMPORIA, Kan. -- Concordia-St. Paul's Natalie Mast delivered a run-scoring single in the bottom of the eighth inning Saturday to support the one-hit pitching of Kristen Schmidt, lifting the Bears to a 1-0 win over the Mavericks in the NCAA II North Central Regional. The loss ends UNO's season at 47-13.
Concordia-St. Paul will play Augustana in an elimination game Sunday, with the winner moving on to face No. 2 ranked Emporia State at 3 p.m.
Earlier in the day, Kellyn Kramolisch drove in a pair of runs and Taren Tuley pitched out of two bases-loaded jams in the sixth and seventh to preserve a 3-1 UNO win over Northwest Missouri State to elminate the Bearcats.
Schmidt and Tuley engaged in a classic pitching duel in the second game. Schmidt retired 19 batters in a row before Katie Novotny broke up the perfect game with a single to center in the top of the seventh. Schmidt twice fanned four straight batters and finished with 14 strikeouts in the game.
Tuley, meanwhile, yielded just a bunt single in the second and a single in the fourth until the bottom of the seventh. The Bears then threatened with a single and an error to put runners on first and second, but Tuley got the final out on an infield ground ball.
In the eighth, Tuley's throwing error allowed the lead-off hitter, Kelly Schwietz to go to second. Mallory Olson singled to right to send Schwietz to third and Nast followed with a looping single to right. Schwietz barely beat the throw home by Kramolisch.
In the first game, Kramolisch lined a one-out, bases-loaded 0-2 pitch to left to score Shilo Jorgensen and Brooke Wagner in the bottom of the second. The Mavericks added an insurance run in the fourth. Brianna Cataudella led off with a double and Kramolisch sacrificed her to third before Alison Jergenson lined a single to center.
"Kramolisch drove the ball well," UNO coach Jeanne Scarpello said. "She took advantage of a mistake on the pitch. We're starting to get hits from more people in the lineup."
Tuley (19-5) retired the first eight batters in the game before yielding a two-out single in the third to Linellis Santiago. But the Bearcats never mounted a threat in the early innings, thanks to several outstanding fielding plays by third baseman Leslie Svoboda, who finished with eight assists and three putouts. Svoboda nabbed a line drive by Janelle Krohn and fired to Lauren McArthur to double up Ashley Pride to end the fourth.
Northwest Missouri State (40-15) loaded the bases with no one out in the sixth. Tuley then got Pride to hit a one-hopper to the mound and forced Santiago at home. Svoboda ended the threat when she speared another line shot from Krohn and dove to the bag to double off Katy John.
The Bearcats filled the bases in the seventh on a single, an error and another single and then scored on a wild pitch by Tuley. But Tuley struck out Tristin Brown and Santiago and retired John on a grounder to first.
"Taren kept the ball on the ground and Leslie made some nice plays," Scarpello said. "Taren handled a tight situation really well."
