Mavs Defeat Wayne State in Regional Opener

EMPORIA, Kan. -- Nebraska-Omaha earned a 6-4 victory over Wayne State in the opening game of the NCAA II Central Regional on Thursday afternoon.
The Mavericks, 44-12 and ranked No. 12, will play on Friday at 7 p.m. against Minnesota State, Mankato. MSU defeated Central Missouri State 8-6 on Thursday.
Nebraska-Omaha never trailed in the contest but fought off a Wildcat team that tied the score on three occasions.
"The thing I was most impressed with today was the way our guys responded," UNO Head Coach Bob Herold said. "Everytime Wayne State came after us, we had an answer. We came out ready to play today."
UNO took a 1-0 lead in the first inning after Wayne State starter Travis Mortimore stuggled with his control. Mortimore walked three batters in the inning, including a bases loaded free pass to Min Sung.
Wayne State tied the score in the second inning on an RBI sacrifice fly by Chris Pedroza.
UNO's Marc Centofante, who finished the game 3-for-4, singled to left field to open the third inning and advanced to third base two batters later on Evan Porter's double off the left field wall. Sung put the Mavs up 2-1 on a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring Centofante. WSC's Scott Bidroski then belted his seventh home run of the year to dead center in the fourth inning to tie the game at 2-2.
The Mavs responded in the bottom half of the inning to take 3-2 lead. Matt Meyer collected his second hit of the afternoon with a one-out single up the middle. He later scored on Centofante's RBI single to right field.
The Wildcats once again knotted the score in the sixth inning after Bidroski drew a leadoff walk and later scored on a two-out fielding error to make the score 3-3. Blake Denoyer (4-0) came on to relieve starter Tyler Cloyd after a double by Ian DeLaet. Denoyer struck out Alex Koch with runners at second and third to end the threat.
Nebraska-Omaha would then take the lead for good in the bottom of the sixth inning, plating three runs on Bryan Frew's two-out single up the middle with the bases loaded.
Shawn Smith closed the door on the Wildcats for the final two frames, picking up his eighth save of the year with hitless relief.
