Mavericks Sign Junior College Player

UNO head coach Derrin Hansen said Tuesday that Jerry Bennett, from Des Moines Area Community College, has signed a national letter of intent to attend UNO next fall.
Bennett is a 6-7, 235-pound forward who averaged 10.5 points and 7.5 rebounds last season while earning second-team all-conference honors. He is a native of Waterloo, Iowa, and was a second-team all-state selection for Waterloo East in 2004.
"Jerry is a going to be a good addition to our team," Hansen said. "With the loss of our seniors, he will be able to stabilize our inside game."
Bennett is the second signee for the Mavericks, joining Andrew Bridger, a six-foot, 175-pound two-time all-state point guard from Lincoln Northeast High School, who signed a national letter of intent last fall. Bridger earned first-team Super State honors as a senior, helping lead his team into the state Class A tournament.
The Mavericks lose four seniors from last year's team, Calvin Kapels, Ryan Curtis, Chris DeSpain and Quantel Murphy. In addition, Hansen also announced that Jamaal Byers will not return next season.
